Apiculture Dictionary

In apiculture, like other activities, some specific terms are used in order to name tools or situations, the most common ones are the following:

• Colony, is the group of every individuals that live in the same place, they are organized to survive and defend themselves against other species attacks.

• Swarm, is the group of bees that leave the colony and go to settle down in another place. Apiculture men also prepare them.

• Beehive, is the material place where the bees live, it can be made by men or it can be a natural hole.

• Handling, is the work that apiculture men do over the colony in order to improve some natural condition.

• Nucleus, is the generic name of tiny beehives which are used in the transportation of propitious swarms by apiculture men.

• Operculating, this is the action of closing the little cages where queens, males and honeybees will be born.

• Disoperculating, this is the oppossite action of the previous one. It consists on opening the little cages. This task is made with several tools.

• Royallery, is the special cage that the queen uses as a cradle.
